  • Aspects of High Performance Computing, the underlying national e-infrastructures and the international dimension
Patrick Aerts (Director, Netherlands National Computing Facilities Foundation)

High Performance Computing and computational science have developed in close interaction with the development of computational power. Ever new scientific insights grew out of that development. Meanwhile all over the modern economies of the world advanced computing has become subject of policies at a national level, be it on grids, or supercomputers or both. Organization of e-infrastructures, investment planning, resource allocation through peer review, resource scheduling and everything related became matters of national policies. At least for those parts of the infrastructure that can be considered beyond the scope of an individual university or institute. Examples will be given of such national structures. Furthermore developments at the top of the computer market continue to take place and so are the ambitions of scientists that need those facilities. Examples will be given and European and worldwide developments will be presented.

Prof. Gürel, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’den 1988 yılında MS, 1991 yılında PhD derecelerini almıştır. ABD’de IBM Watson Araştırma Merkezi’nde 3 yıl süreyle çalıştıktan sonra 1994 yılında, halen profesör olarak görev yaptığı Bilkent Üniversitesi’nde çalışmaya başlamıştır. Bilişimsel elektromanyetik alanındaki çalışmaları, elektromanyetik saçılım ve ışıma, metamalzemeler, nanoteknoloji, optik, yüzeyaltı saçılımı, antenler, radarlar, EMI/EMC, tıbbi görüntüleme paralel bilişim ve paralelleştirme algoritmaları gibi birçok alanda yaygın bir etkiye sahiptir. Prof. Gürel halen Radio Science, IEEE Antennas and Wireles Propagation Letters, Progress in Electromagentics Research ve Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications gibi, elektromanyetik alanında ileri gelen dört dergide yardımcı editör olarak görev yapmaktadır.
